Leamington Spa

Reasons To Move

Leamington Spa is now an affluent town with an array of shops, great restaurants and trendy wine bars. Families searching for a property here are always looking for good schooling with a comfortable lifestyle. Students although studying at Warwick University (in Coventry) often chose to live within certain parts of Leamington Spa.

Located By

Conveniently located for good access to the A45, A46 and M40. Leamington is just 10 miles from Coventry, 25 miles from Birmingham and 100 miles to London which takes just 90 minutes on the train.

Styles Of Property

Leamington town centre itself is spoilt for choice when it comes to the selection of property styles. Generally remembered for its beautiful Georgian architecture it also sports Regency and Victorian homes. There is a strong demand from families for good schooling, from within the popular suburbs such as Milverton, Cubbington, Lillington and Whitnash that surround Leamington.

History

The town of Leamington Spa, originally known as Leamington Priors was a tiny village until about 1800. Built in close proximity to the River Leam it now creates a perfect north south divide. In July 1814 “The Royal Pump Room and Baths”, designed and built by C.S Smith of Warwick at a cost of £30,000 were officially opened. This iconic building has been central to the development of Leamington Spa as a town. In the 19th century it experienced one of the most rapid population growths in the country.

In 1838 Queen Victoria was so taken in by Leamington Spa’s appeal she branded the town with a Royal prefix. Outside of the town hall there is a statue of Queen Victoria, which famously had a lucky escape from a German bomb in World War II. The bomb could only move the statue an inch from its plinth and it still remains in this position today.

Leamington Spa is also closely associated with the founding of Lawn Tennis. It is believed the sport was formed in 1872 by Major Henry Gem and Augurio Pereira on lawns at the back of The Manor House Hotel. The rules of Lawn Tennis were drawn up in 1874 at Leamington Tennis Club.

Interesting Features

Leamington has an array of facilities including The Assembly music and entertainment venue, Apollo Cinema, Swimming Baths, Municipal and Private Golf Courses, Royal Priors Shopping Centre, The Shires Retail Park, Train Station and Jephson Gardens. A previous Britain in Bloom winner. Leamington also hosts an annual peace festival.

Over the years Newman associates have been involved with several campaigns working alongside several charities. From wearing a pair of jeans to work to running several consecutive marathons in 7 consecutive days across the Sahara desert our people have sacrificed time and money to help those less fortunate.

TEAM Jonathan Handford

Good things have certainly come in threes for Rugby Swimming Club with league success, European competition and new sponsorship all coming together this week. In the run up to last Saturday’s promotion to the top flight of Midlands junior swimming, the club received donations from leading Rugby firms including Newman Estate Agents. Jonathan Handford, MD of Newmans, said, ”We are delighted to contribute towards the growth of a club that is raising Rugby’s sporting profile in the region. We believe that results come from hard work and dedication and the recent success of Rugby’s swimmers is proof of that.”

There’s also continental competition for Rugby Swimming Club this week, with Ross Turner swimming for club, town and country in the European Masters Championships in Cadiz, Spain. Follow his progress online at www.cadizmaster2009.es/eng_index.html as Ross competes in the 50m and 100m breaststroke. Rugby Swimming Club is always on the lookout for new talent so any 8-16 year olds interested in joining the club should contact Sarah Furniss at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Jon

A short note, but a very BIG THANK YOU for the very generous support which you have recently provided to Rugby Swimming Club.

I think Hemesh and Anthony have already explained that your sponsorship will be used to help fund the cost of team kit for the up-coming district Junior League final.

The league comprises 3 divisions, each of 24 teams. After 3 rounds of competition, the top 6 teams in each division are invited to swim at a special finals day at which promotion is settled. The finals are a big day for swimmers who compete: spectator areas are packed (tickets are always over-subscribed) and provide very loud support; teams parade on to the poolside in their kit which is specially designed/ printed to mark the occasion.

Once swimmers have participated in a finals day, they remember it for years to follow and continue to wear their kit at other events for many months afterwards (or at least until they inevitably grow out of it!).

Specially printed swim hats, T shirts etc. are not cheap to purchase for 30+ swimmers. Parents contribute towards the cost of the kit and the Club uses fundraising activities and sponsorship to try and offset this cost. Your very generous donation will help greatly.

On behalf of the whole club, thank you for your support.
