History

The town of Leamington Spa, originally known as Leamington Priors was a tiny village until about 1800. Built in close proximity to the River Leam it now creates a perfect north south divide. In July 1814 “The Royal Pump Room and Baths”, designed and built by C.S Smith of Warwick at a cost of £30,000 were officially opened. This iconic building has been central to the development of Leamington Spa as a town. In the 19th century it experienced one of the most rapid population growths in the country.

In 1838 Queen Victoria was so taken in by Leamington Spa’s appeal she branded the town with a Royal prefix. Outside of the town hall there is a statue of Queen Victoria, which famously had a lucky escape from a German bomb in World War II. The bomb could only move the statue an inch from its plinth and it still remains in this position today.

Leamington Spa is also closely associated with the founding of Lawn Tennis. It is believed the sport was formed in 1872 by Major Henry Gem and Augurio Pereira on lawns at the back of The Manor House Hotel. The rules of Lawn Tennis were drawn up in 1874 at Leamington Tennis Club.
